Most people have heard the term “flushable wipes” by now. The problem is, plumbers across Sydney are pulling these things out of blocked sewer lines almost every single week.
A lot of homeowners assume that if something disappears down the toilet, it must be safe for the drainage system. Unfortunately, that’s not how it works underground.
Wet wipes are one of the biggest causes of recurring sewer blockages in Sydney homes right now. Not just in older houses either. Even newer properties with modern PVC pipework can end up completely blocked because of wipes building up in the line.
Quite often, the blockage doesn’t happen immediately. That’s what catches people out.
A toilet might still flush for months while wipes slowly catch on rough joins, tree roots, cracked pipes or old scale buildup inside the sewer line. Then one day after heavy rain or extra usage over a weekend, the entire system backs up without warning.
That’s usually when the panic starts:
And once plumbers camera inspect the drain, wet wipes are very commonly sitting right in the middle of the problem.
Technically, some brands market themselves as flushable. Realistically, plumbers would strongly disagree with the term.
Toilet paper is designed to break down very quickly once it hits water. Wet wipes don’t. Even wipes labelled “flushable” often stay mostly intact as they travel through the drainage system. Instead of disintegrating, they tend to twist together into long rope-like masses underground.
Once that happens, they start catching on anything inside the pipe.
In Sydney, common things wipes get caught on include:
A lot of homeowners are shocked when they see drain camera footage because the wipes are often still fully recognisable underground weeks or months later. Some even still have the patterns and branding visible on them.
